Fall 2009 eNews: InterNetzo By Lindsay Edwards and Esther Landau Five Walden Events – one virtual and four actual – filled our spring and summer. And there are more just around the corner – perhaps in a city near you! A sight-seeing plane ride around the Statue of Liberty? A reading of your composition by a string quartet? Where does one find such things? At Walden’s online auction, of course! Donors to our auction in April were creative and generous, and the bidding was lively. Best of all, we met our goal, raising $5,000 for financial aid for Walden’s programs. Beautiful music by Walden student Chris Beachy’s jazz duo opened the event on April 26th at the Andreasson/Beachy home in Stanford, California. Later, the musical program featured piano music performed by Chris Beachy and Morgan Kusmer. Walden faculty member Marshall Bessières played a piece composed at Walden by Hunter Jones. Prior to the performance, Hunter spoke eloquently about the impact Walden has had on his life. On May 3rd, surrounded by exotic textiles at the Peter Pap Rug Gallery in San Francisco, guests gathered to enjoy delicious food, and music performed by Walden alumnus David Boyden and Walden Development Director Esther Landau. David Boyden impressed with performances on both violin and mandolin, including an original work that he began at Walden, as well as a composition by Walden student Sarah Snider.
Exquisite weather made for a perfect and very well-attended event at the Silitch home in Dublin, New Hampshire on August 1st. Rising star British violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen performed Bach, Bartok, and a work by her sister, Walden alumna Freya Waley-Cohen, written when she was a 14-year-old student at Walden.
Equally well-attended was a party at Arno and Ruth Drucker’s home in Baltimore on September 13, where the musical program featured pianist and Walden student Vincent Henningfield and Peabody Trio violinist Violaine Melançon. Coming up is a special fundraiser at Birdland in New York on Sunday, October 18 at 5 p.m., featuring singer and Walden alumna Hilary Kole. And in the spring, pianist Leon Fleisher will perform a benefit concert for Walden in San Francisco.
Walden gatherings are always fun. If you’d like to host an event in your area – large or small – to raise money for Walden or connect with other alumni, please contact Esther Landau, Director of Development, at elandau@waldenschool.org.
