Walden’s Teacher Training Institute at Oberlin

By Seth Brenzel

On July 6, The Walden School launched a new initiative in collaboration with the Oberlin Conservatory of Music’s Masters in Music Teaching program. Graduate students at Oberlin were immersed in Walden musicianship, solfège, rhythms, computer musicianship and technology training in a 5-day workshop modeled on the highly successful summer Intensives held for the last five summers in New Hampshire. Patricia Plude, Director of Walden’s Teacher Training Institute, joined Tom Lopez, our Director of Computer Music and also an Oberlin faculty member, in Ohio for this intensive, designed to expose music teachers to the creative and thorough pedagogical approaches that comprise Walden’s Teacher Training Institute curriculum, as well as help further develop and enrich individual participants’ musical skills. Walden and Oberlin both hope that this will lead to future collaborative opportunities, and Pat, Tom and the Teacher Training Institute faculty are contemplating other possible initiatives at other institutions around the United States and abroad. Stay tuned!

For more information on this exciting new development, visit Oberlin’s Summer Program web page or contact Patricia Plude, Teacher Training Institute Director, at teachers@waldenschool.org.
