Winter 2009 eNews: InterNetzo While there are lots of activities that people would rather be doing (fishing, riding motorcycles, knitting) less advertised on automobile derrières are "drills." Yet every summer in Dublin, New Hampshire, a group of young musicians and music teachers gather to enthusiastically do keyboard drills, sing, compose and improvise. Would you or someone you know "rather be doing drills" this summer? The Walden School is now accepting applications for our 2009 Young Musicians Program and Teacher Training Institute. The Walden School’s Young Musicians Program Our flagship program returns for its 37th summer on the campus of the Dublin School in Dublin, New Hampshire. From June 27 – August 2, 50 young musicians will gather to hike mountains, explore musicianship, composition, chorus and many other musical enrichments. This summer will also have an exciting concert series that you can read more about in the article Musicians Converge in Dublin, New Hampshire in this issue of InterNetzo. While the first application deadline has already passed (January 9), there are still two more opportunities (February 27th and April 10th) for you or someone you know to apply. Walden’s emphasis on building a community and a small teacher to student ratio (1:4) does however mean that we can only accept 50 students to the Young Musicians Program each summer. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure the best chance of admission and access to financial aid (if needed). To download an application click here. If you would like to learn more about this program please visit our Young Musicians Program webpage or contact us directly at students@waldenschool.org. Walden’s Teacher Training Institute Summer Intensive: Developing Creative Expression Also in residence at The Dublin School this summer is our Teacher Training Institute’s weeklong intensive (August 5 – 12). This program draws teachers from all over the world who are interested in nurturing greater musical creativity – both in their own teaching as well as in their students’ work. All workshops offered during the week are based upon The Walden School Musicianship Course, an original approach to teaching the fundamentals of music with an emphasis on creative application, specifically through improvisation and composition. This course, which is the academic cornerstone of the above mentioned Young Musicians Program, offers effective, activity-based methods for developing fluency with theoretical concepts, creative techniques for teaching solfège and rhythms, and a unique and inspiring computer musicianship curriculum. To learn more about this course visit our Musicianship Course Webpage or you can read a review of The Walden School Musicianship Course: A Manual for Teachers. Admissions and financial aid decisions for the Intensive are made on a rolling basis. There is a discounted application fee of $25 for applications received by April 15, 2009. The standard $50 application fee applies to any applications received after April 15. To download an application, click here.
