Nnenna Ogwo, Piano

Walden's 2003 Concert Series will commence with a recital by pianist and Walden Alumna Nnenna Ogwo. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, a recipient of a Fulbright Award, and a D.M.A. candidate at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Ms. Ogwo is actively committed to working with composers, performing and premiering their work in order to help insure the vitality and continuity of contemporary music. The Walden School is honored to welcome Nnenna Ogwo's return to our community - both as an alumna and as a featured concert artist.

Padma Newsome (viola), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Rachael Elliott (bassoon), Thomas Kozumplik (percussion),

CLOGS, a dynamic New York-based contemporary and improvising ensemble, features the music of Australian composer and violist, Padma Newsome, with American musicians and composers Bryce Dessner, guitar; Rachael Elliott, bassoon; and Thomas Kozumplik, percussion. The group blends the sounds of contemporary classical music, the traditional rhythms and harmonies of folk music from various cultures, and the raw energy of rock into its own, idiosyncratic style. This concert will feature music from their spring tour in Great Britain.

Throughout their residency, CLOGS will work with Walden Faculty Composers to rehearse original works that will have been composed for the ensemble prior to the season. Their residency will culminate in this concert, an exciting evening featuring the premiere performances of the new Walden Faculty works.

The Walden School Ensemble-in-Residence

The Walden School's much loved and highly acclaimed ENSEMBLE-IN-RESIDENCE, NON SEQUITUR, will return again to Dublin for the final two weeks of Walden's 2003 Season. Non Sequitur will conduct an exciting, interactive workshop with the community, perform one concert, work with Walden student composers as they complete their original compositions, and perform these new works over three evenings of Festival Week Composers Forums.

NON SEQUITUR is recognized as one of the most exciting and versatile new music ensembles emerging today. Taking contemporary music as a point of departure, Non Sequitur's performances bring together works from composers such as Boulez, Mingus, Xenakis, and Zappa, and incorporate improvisation, theater, and popular and non-western music. Over their five years together, they have given over 100 U.S. and world premieres, including works by Thomas Ad¶s and Michael Torke, and have a well-respected reputation for their ability and insight in preparing new works. Non Sequitur has worked with notable composers George Tsontakis, Melinda Wagner, Bernard Rands, John Harbison, and George Crumb. A large part of their existence has been devoted to education, giving interactive workshops to students ranging from pre-school up to graduate level.

The Walden School is honored to present composer ADOLPHUS HAILSTORK as The Walden School's 2003 COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE. A prolific composer of works for chorus, solo voice, various chamber ensembles, band, and orchestra, Dr. Hailstork is honored by many commissions and awards, including being named the Laureate in Music of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently a professor of music and Composer-in-Residence at Old Dominion University, Dr. Hailstork will enrich our Festival by presenting his music to the Walden community and presiding over three evenings of Festival Week Composers Forums. This annual tradition concludes The Walden School Festival Week and is the culmination of a summer of music making at Walden. The Walden School Chorus, comprising students, faculty, and staff, will present its annual concert of choral music - a mix of contemporary and classical favorites.
