All events (except the July 30 Choral Concert) are in the Louise Shonk Kelly Recital Hall on the campus of the Dublin School, Dublin, New Hampshire.

Bryce Dessner, guitar

Bryce Dessner (US) performs regularly as a solo classical guitarist, and in rock and new music settings on the electric guitar with performances in Germany, France, and Switzerland and throughout the United States and Canada. This past January he gave his debut recital for the 92nd Street Y's New York Guitar Festival. Bryce recently recorded "Grains of Paradise" (Tzadik) with world-renowned jazz cellist, Erik Friedlander. In addition to his work as guitarist and composer with Clogs, one of The Walden School's 2003 Ensembles-in-Residence, Bryce also performs with the critically acclaimed rock band, The National. Calliope Duo

Performing original works written by Walden School Faculty Composers In Residence at The Walden School July 5 - 12

Elizabeth McNutt and Shannon Wettstein formed the Calliope Duo in 1999 while pursuing their doctorates in contemporary music performance practice, a unique degree program at the University of California at San Diego. In their collaborations as the Calliope Duo and in their highly acclaimed solo performances, Drs. McNutt and Wettstein focus on the most original, innovative, and excellent newly composed music. The Calliope Duo presents works that extend from the latter half of the twentieth century into the beginning of the twenty-first, including performances with cutting-edge computer technology. Through collaborations with composers and outreach to audiences, the Calliope Duo works to build the concert repertoire and audiences of the future.

Marilyn Crispell, piano

Marilyn Crispell is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music where she studied classical piano and composition, and is an alumna of the Junior Conservatory Camp, the predecessor program to The Walden School. She discovered jazz through the music of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and other contemporary jazz players and composers. For ten years she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and the Reggie Workman Ensemble. She is a member of the Barry Guy New Orchestra and has been a frequent guest with his London Jazz Composers Orchestra. "Ms. Crispell has created a rich, personal expression that is breathtaking in its originality and visceral energy," writes the Christian Science Monitor. The Walden School Ensemble-in-Residence

The Walden School's highly acclaimed ENSEMBLE-IN-RESIDENCE, NON SEQUITUR, will return again to The Walden School for the final two weeks of Walden's 2004 Season. Non Sequitur will conduct an exciting, interactive workshop with the community, perform one concert, work with Walden student composers as they complete their original compositions, and perform these new works over three evenings of Festival Week Composers Forums.

NON SEQUITUR is recognized as one of the most exciting and versatile new music ensembles emerging today. Taking contemporary music as a point of departure, Non Sequitur's performances bring together works from composers such as Boulez, Mingus, Xenakis, and Zappa, and incorporate improvisation, theater, and popular and non-western music. Over their five years together, they have given over 100 U.S. and world premieres, including works by Thomas Adès and Michael Torke, and have a well-respected reputation for their ability and insight in preparing new works. Non Sequitur has worked with notable composers George Tsontakis, Melinda Wagner, Bernard Rands, John Harbison, and George Crumb. A large part of their existence has been devoted to education, giving interactive workshops to students ranging from pre-school up to graduate level.

The Walden School is honored to present composer Alex Shapiro as The Walden School's 2004 COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE. Published by Activist Music, Alex's award-winning scores can be found in libraries and universities nationwide, and her works are performed weekly in concerts across the U.S. and abroad. Her music can be heard on the Cambria Master Recordings, Innova Recordings and Millennia Arts labels and on many NPR radio stations.

"...Alex Shapiro is a name people should know, she's got it all. She is, in a word, a serious and significant composer of beautiful music. Hats off!" - Music & Vision Magazine.

This annual tradition concludes The Walden School Festival Week and is the culmination of a summer of music making at Walden. The Walden School Chorus, comprising students, faculty, and staff, will present its annual concert of choral music - a mix of contemporary and classical favorites.

Note: This event will take place in the The Alumni Recital Hall of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. The Redfern Arts Center is on the campus of Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire.
